CVE-2008-5256 – Schwachstelle in Sun xVM VirtualBox vor Version 2.0.6

Die Virtualisierungs-Software Sun xVM VirtualBox vor Version 2.0.6
legt Lockfiles in /tmp auf unsichere Weise an. Ein lokaler Angreifer
kann dadurch mit Hilfe eines symbolischen Links beliebige Dateien des
Benutzers ueberschreiben, der VirtualBox verwendet.

Betroffen sind die folgenden Software Pakete und Plattformen:

An insecure temporary file creation security vulnerability in Sun xVM
VirtualBox may allow a local unprivileged user to create or overwrite
arbitrary files, with the access privileges of the user running the
VirtualBox.

This issue can occur in the following releases:
x86 Platform
* Sun xVM VirtualBox 1.6, 2.0.0, 2.0.2 and 2.0.4

Linux
* Sun xVM VirtualBox 1.6, 2.0.0, 2.0.2 and 2.0.4

Mac OSX
* Sun xVM VirtualBox 1.6, 2.0.0, 2.0.2 and 2.0.4

Notes:
1. Sun xVM VirtualBox does not run on the SPARC Platform
2. Sun xVM VirtualBox packages for Windows are not affected.
To determine the version of xVM VirtualBox on a system, you can do one
of the following:
In the Menu of Sun xVM VirtualBox, select Help -> About VirtualBox
Or,
From the command line, run “VBoxManage -version” in the product
installation directory.
3. Symptoms
Extra files appear or existing files suddenly have different content.
The file contents are very small; such as a single line containing only
a number.
4. Workaround
There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the “Resolution”
section below.
